Letterpress for the 21st Century | Australian Specialty Printers

GOLD FOIL EMBOSS AUSTRALIAN CRESTHaven’t heard of specialty printers, Watermarx Graphics? You must be living under a rock! Just kidding… but, seriously?

OK, here’s the run-down if you haven’t met us yet or you need a reminder before you bump into us at the next graphic design or print event in Sydney 😉

We are a team of dedicated print specialists. Our workshop is in Brookvale and, if you have met us, you will probably know our owners, the dynamic duo Al Fawcett and Ange O’Dea.

We’ve been at this for a while. It’s a rare occasion that we have the chance to step back and take check of what has been going on all these years. We opened our doors here in Sydney’s Northern Beaches in 2005 and have been working on print design projects at the very top end of the market ever since.

What kind of printing does Watermarx Graphics specialise in?

We really have done it all! At our heart, we are artisans and craftspeople who have carved out a niche in fancy embellishments. We try to take print design from great to out-of-this-world. That’s really our jam.

Our services include:

• Letterpress Printing
• Foil Stamping
• Embossing and Debossing
Texturing Paper
• Edge Gilding

We do this for designers, design studios and we have awesome relationships with several print companies who we collaborate with to get their trade finishing done. In other words, we become our clients’ secret weapon so that they can offer their clients all these specialty extras.

We’re not just a pretty face, though. We’re inventors!

We got so good at this stuff that we patented letterpress technology called CLIQX. It’s the polymer system that we use to achieve our signature sharp, paper-sculpted letterpress and embossing results.

What’s more, people love it. That is why we have been lucky enough to claim so many industry accolades over the years for our work.

We don’t like to brag, but…

  • 2016 Media Super National Print Awards Silver & Bronze
  • 2016 FSEA Broze and Gold Leaf Award (USA) for “Invitations” & “Embossing and Letterpress”
  • 2013 FSEA Gold Leaf Award (USA) for “Excellence in Foil Stamping & Embossing”
  • 2012 FSEA Bronze Leaf Award (USA)
  • 2013 National Print Awards – Printing Industries Association of Australia, Bronze for “Specialty Print”
  • 2008 National Print Awards – Printing Industries Association of Australia, Bronze for “Innovation”
  • 2013 NSW PICA Excellence Awards Gold & Silver for “Stationary” & “Specialty Print”
  • 2012 NSW PICA Excellence Awards Gold & Silver for “Stationary”, “Self-Promotion”, “Small Business Category” & “Specialty Print”
  • 2011 NSW PICA Excellence Awards Gold, Silver & Bronze for “Specialty Print”
  • 2010 NSW PICA Excellence Awards Silver
  • 2010 GASAA Printovation Awards Gold

…and that’s just to name a few.

Passionate About Print Design and Paper Art

We’re design geeks and type freaks when it comes to print on paper. We can talk about textures, stock weights, inks, dies, foils, depth or height of an emboss and machines with you all day. Well, we could if we weren’t so busy helping our clients create A-list event invitations, stunning wedding invitations, business cards without compare, marketing materials to turn heads and more. Still, it’s always a delight to take a moment to sit back and smell the…envelopes?

There you have it! We’re acquainted now so don’t be a stranger. Call, email or Facebook stalk us anytime. We want to hear about what you have cooking and have lots of ideas about how we can help make it amazing!

The royal wedding of the year has just come and gone but we print regal invitations for our clients all year ‘round. Here is a look at two hot colour trends for wedding invitations that we’ve noticed so far in 2018.

So, it’s signed, sealed, delivered…you’re in love. While your upcoming wedding might be all-consuming in your world, it might not loom as large in your guests’ lives. The best way to stay top-of-mind is to have memorable, unique wedding invitations. It’s the first piece to define your style of event and set the tone for your special day.

Nothing sets an emotional tone like a colour. At Watermarx where we have so much fun seeing invitations for milestone events leap off our printing presses and into envelopes. We also have the benefit of seeing upcoming bridal trends. This season we’ve noticed two standout shades that seem to be the upcoming look of the year, and they both sing with romance.

Your wedding colour scheme can come from anywhere but nature is a great source of inspiration. Pinks and greens are perennial favourites but we’re really seeing brides embrace the fresh, springtime combination of blush pink and green. It has a celebratory and pretty feel without being too girly.

Blush pink and green are popping up everywhere in design. For more ideas on how to use the colours, keep your eyes open. You will see them starring in magazine page layouts, interior decorating, fashion catwalks and more.

range of colour swatches from mint to emerald and forest greenRight now, green is truly having its day in the chlorophyll-generating sun (sorry, geeky science/gardener joke). From the quiet sophistication of Hunter green to the fierce and dazzling “Kermit” green, to the high drama of emerald, green is the new black in 2018.

There is a huge trend in wedding place settings, bouquets and décor to be kept to simply lovely greenery only (no florals). We are seeing couples take this look through to their wedding stationery using lushly heavy stock in a neutral colour (white or cream, mainly, but don’t discount black if you’re looking to make a theatrical statement) and a pop of their green foil of choice.

Develop a natural and unique motif based on the greenery in your arrangements or in space you will be married in (is there climbing ivy on that hotel courtyard wall, or soft willow trees along the water at the vineyard?) Foil or emboss this on menus, place cards, signage and stationery to create a richly layered theme.

Blush (a slightly lighter take on the popular “nude”) can mean different things to different people. It is in the same palette as muted pinks like muted like champagne and cream but with the rosy addition of a hint of pink.

Blush pink foil adds a sweet twinkle of luxury to invitations. Foil pretties them up by attracting light to dance on the surface. There’s just something about a foiled element or two on the page elevates the design to another level of elegance.

Carry the theme throughout your event with subtle elements. Add a blush pink insert to line your envelopes for a very polished look.

Bring both colours together, the way nature intended! Oh boy, they really are our favourite combination right now. We are seeing some gorgeous combinations of pink and green coming off the press at the moment and we’re delighted and inspired.

If chosen well, pink and green hues can really balance each other. Pairs like vintage dusty rose and sage, or the playful lightness of seafoam with salmon pink, or the elegant combination of mint and rosé, or the lively earthiness of olive with peach each inspire a different mood.

From soft, garden weddings to sophisticated, urban ceremonies, these colours are flexible and can be layered in all kinds of ways to really weave their magic throughout your event.

To avoid disappointment, “Save The Dates” should go out as soon as possible (ideally six to twelve months before the wedding). Wedding invitations should be out six to eight weeks before the wedding, and if the date falls on a holiday, long weekend or is a destination wedding, it’s always a good idea to leave more time (ten to twelve weeks) so that people can make arrangements around work and accommodation.
