When designer, Olivia Wood, decided to get married her friends were surprised that she didn’t design her own invitation. Instead, she turned to a good friend, Georgia White, Senior Designer at Equilibrium Design, who she had studied with. But Olivia knew two heads are better than one with these things!

WMX: Who designed your invitation?

OW: Georgia White, and I studied at UTS graduating with Hons. Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication, 2011. As it was my wedding I thought it was best to collaborate my ideas and inspiration with my amazing friend Georgia.

People may have asked why I didn’t design my own creative suite for my wedding. I knew from the very beginning that a collaboration would help me as there are so many decisions to be made when planning a wedding, so instead of constantly judging my own designs it enabled me to celebrate my ideas with my gorgeous friend Georgia’s creative energy and expertise in print design. She created the invitations as a digital vector texture and we had handwritten calligraphy. Bek Burrows hand-wrote our names. She is my wedding stylist and has absolutely stunning writing.

WMX: What inspiration the design of the invitations?

OW: Our chosen location for the wedding, the art gallery MONA, in Hobart. I approached Georgia with a brief, I wanted the invite to emulate the textures of the building. I wanted the design to be dramatic, modern and traditional all at the same time. My brief to her for the invites to be different and bold. The design was to have a utilitarian edge, but at the same time, to be romantic. The envelopes were stunning!  They were lined with gold Curious Collection metallic paper, deep red calligraphy to match the invite handwritten by stylist.

  • Colour palette: earthy and metallic
  • Monogram: a traditional serif with a modern edge
  • Font: sans serif body copy and traditional calligraphy 

WMX: Was it standalone or were there other printed elements that tied into the theme?

OW: We did an extra run of the mongram side without the red background for the thank you cards, A5 letterpressed menu dark grey font with guest names in large deep red calligraphy at the top, seating plan as a fold out flyer given to each guest as they boarded the Ferry and our wedding website.

WMX:  What materials did you use and why?

OW: Any speciality finish on offer, we wanted to have it! 🙂 The specs were: 600gsm cotton letterpressed, foiled, gold guilded edges, 2 colour PMS. The foil was to bring out the metallics, full colour deep red back to match the colour palette of the wedding (gold and deep red).

WMX: How did you collaborate with Watermarx on in the making of these invitations?

Angela was my main point of contact. She suggested we add gilded edges to blend both sides of the invite together. She also gave us the idea to print an extra run of the gold foiled monogram and textured back for the Thank You cards, which turned out to be very cost effective! She suggested that bulk up the lines in the artwork so the texture was bolder and more effective with the foil.

WMX: How will the theme of the invitations carried into other elements of the wedding?

Maroon bridesmaids dresses, deep reds in the flowers, gold building and cutlery, dark grey linen table cloth (to match the body font).

WMX: What’s your favourite thing about the design?

I love the calligraphed names, the paper weight and the depth of colour. I’ve enjoyed hearing from people that they find the design unusual and edgy.
