TOUCHING STUFF | Tactile print will be $1.9bn industry

A report that released this week from BCC Research in the USA, announced that the tactile printing market will grow by 60 percent. The experts predict that the industry will be worth $1.9bn in 2022, globally.

They cite the reason being the growing demand for innovative packaging. The report says that businesses are now seeking out-of-the-ordinary packaging to grab a consumer’s attention. More and more consumer business are using tactile features like embossing and debossing for their packaging and labels, which is driving a boom in dimensional printing.

The author of the report, Robert Eckard, says, “Where a product’s packaging can more wholly engage a potential purchaser through tactile elements, this can be a competitive edge for one product over another. Sensory marketing was born of this consumer preference for pleasing tactile elements in packaging.”

We are excited to be one of Australia’s leaders when it comes to emerging technologies around this trend. We have seen print embellishments go from a luxury add-on to a key marketing strategy for brands looking to cut through. This is why we have invested in CLIQX technology.

With CLIQX, printers are now able to offer everything from braille printing for the visually impaired, to a crisp emboss or deboss. Now, it seems, the market is truly realising that there is more to this than just zhuzhing up your product packaging or business cards. Tactile printing has a number of functional purposes and is driving purchasing decisions.

Watermarx has been in on this secret for a long time. Our passion for the romance of print is inspired by the powerful impact that we know can be made when you engage your customers’ sense of touch. We didn’t need a report to prove it, but we’re chuffed that research is now saying what we have known all along!

Talk to us anytime about how we can get your customers’ senses tickled with the sensory delights of tactile printing.

MARRIAGE WITH TEXTURE | Wedding stationery with all the feels

DAPPLED ENVELOPEWedding Invitations | The season is almost upon us and we’re busy bees here at the shop, helping bring to life some incredible collaborations between original brides, grooms and wedding planners, and their creatively-minded designers.

This beautifully-designed wedding stationery was digitally printed, then we foil stamped and letterpress debossed it with CLIQX. We mounted it, applied a dappled texture effect with CLIQX to the envelope (by now we’re sure you have heard that we are patterning digital stocks, YAY!)  and sent it off to love, to the clever designers at Hawk Creative who really do give us some amazing jobs to work on!

For those who—just like us—have got the geeky letterpress bug or that love the luxurious press of cotton stock against their fingertips, or have always dreamed of their name alongside their future spouse’s in the shimmering lights of foil-stamping, we’d love to print your wedding invitations. It’s truly one of the most lovely parts of this gig as specialty commercial printers. What could be more special than the stationery that sends out the word that a pair is getting hitched? We love love, here at Watermarx Graphics, and we have been

We love love, here at Watermarx Graphics, and we have been nerding over paper, print and design for a loooooong time. If you are planning a wedding (your own or someone else’s) and want to find a cost-effective way to have eye-popping, heart-stopping wedding invitations, then give us a call. We’ve got tricks and tips galore that can help you create truly unique wedding stationery that tells a story through the senses, without breaking the bank.  We’re friendly, so don’t be shy.

Tips for couples and wedding planners organising their invitations:

Don’t leave printing to the last minute. We don’t mean to nag… but really, guys. It might take longer than you think, there are other jobs on the presses and all kinds of other variables. We do make miracles happen here, but we’re mere mortals after all. Why be stressing over this when there are plenty of other aspects of wedding planning you can get your knickers in a twist over!

Don’t start your plan with the paper. Have an overall vision and bounce it off us. We have great paper suppliers and have our mitts all over beautiful stocks all day. We know what paper works with which embellishments, so chances are, we’ll have a nifty suggestion for the stock that will bring to life your idea.

Be smart with colour. Many people don’t realise that with the art of letterpress printing, every different colour, requires a new pass through the machine. Reducing the colours you choose for letterpress printing will make a difference to the cost. If you have a colourful and complicated design, often it’s best to print this part digitally and then highlight elements or print the text with letterpress, or foil like we did for Hawk Creative on this job.

Happy wedding planning!

PLASTIC FANTASTIC | EMBOSSING PLASTIC WITH CLIQX

Have you ever thought about embossing or texturing clear, plastic label stock? Now with the CLIQX embossing system, you can!

What is embossing?

Embossing is an embellishment technique that creates a raised, three-dimensional image the surface. Usually, this would be on paper or card (we call this stock) but lately, we have seen clever experimentation with denser substrates such as polypropylene or plastic label stocks.

CLIQX is a system developed by Watermarx Technologies, based on our years of experience working with both printers and designers, refining the craft of beautiful, premium-quality print finishes. It is excellent and producing a crisp finish, and we are excited to have worked on a number of great jobs recently, that have applied it to plastic surfaces.

Printers – talk to us about adding CLIQX to your mix.

Designers – here are our tips for working with this noble finish!

Design and Embossing – thinking beyond the blank page

Embossing and debossing have been a go-to finish for high-end printing for years. It adds texture and dimension to design that can be elegantly subtle, or offer a 3D POP to bring certain elements off the page (literally!) But, turning your creative minds to how embossing can bring depth and interest to plastic surfaces, like clear labels, can really liven things up.

Here are some ways you can add embossing to surfaces:

  • Blind emboss: Blind embossing is a popular choice with designers and now there is an option to use it on plastic/polpropylene surfaces or labels. This process applies an emboss or texture with no other embellishment, so the effect is subtle and elegant. Think of this for chic, plastic swing tags.
  • Registered emboss: Registered embossing is a process that lines up the embossed image with an ink element created with traditional printing. Think of this for funky plastic invitations with a twist.
  • Combination emboss: this is when your design combines embossing with another embellishment process, such as foil stamping. In fact, foiling is a perfect example because it almost always looks better with the levels that embossing offers because it helps create visual depth and levels for the light to catch, so it dances across the metallic surface.  Think of this for show-stopping business cards.

So, you see, the possibilities are only limited by your imagination. Get in touch and we’ll chat about how to bring some gloss and depth to your next project!
